The company
Founded in 2013, Cailabs designs, manufactures, and develops innovative photonic solutions for the space, industry, telecommunications, and defense sectors. A global specialist in laser shaping, the company has accelerated its growth in the space field with turnkey optical ground stations that integrate atmospheric turbulence compensation technology. This makes it one of the first companies to harness very high data rates enabled by optics in a commercial ground station.
Cailabs currently has 150 employees, including 35 PhDs. With 29 patent families filed, the company is one of the most innovative companies in France. It is headquartered in Rennes, with offices in Paris and Washington (USA).
Internship description
Optical free-space communication is a challenge for future communication systems. The TILBA®-LOS product enables point-to-point links with a throughput of 10 Gbps over distances greater than 10 km. It has the advantage of being highly secure thanks to its highly directional beam, which is difficult to detect. Thanks to the use of optical frequencies, it does not require spectral licences.
You will work within the technical team under the supervision of an optical R&D engineer.
The internship aims to improve the collimation optics in the TILBA®-LOS optical system. It will consist of an evaluation of collimation solutions and their impact on the detector.
Your tasks:
- Use ZEMAX software to determine the shapes of collimation optics that optimise the quality of the received beam and the emitted beam. The aim is to optimise the amount of light received in the detector and the direction of the emitted light so that it targets the receiver of the optical module with which communication is desired.
- Analyse the results of previous test campaigns and any test campaigns carried out during the internship.
- The internship may also include an experimental component involving Pointing Acquisition and Tracking (PAT), which will be optimised by testing new solutions in the laboratory.
